MODE OF ACTION OF VIROSOFTCP4

VIROSOFTCP4 is a viral bioinsecticide. Its active ingredient is a granulvirus (GV) that is specific to Codling moth. Although there have been other GVs on the market before VIROSOFTCP4, this product needs further explanations on its mode of action to increase the level of understanding for the final users.

It is first worth mentioning that, as opposed to the other GVs on the market, VIROSOFTCP4 is the result of a technology developed by BIOTEPP which allows us to select the most efficacious viral strain from our viral bank on the targeted insect. Since it has not been found accidentally like many other GVs, you can expect a higher efficacy rate from VIROSOFTCP4.

To be effective, the virus needs to be ingested by the larvae. There are many ways the insect can ingest the virus. (I) when the larva hatches, it first eats its own eggshell to supply itself with essential nutrients needed to crawl to the fruits. If the eggshell is covered with virus, the larva is infected immediately after hatching. By spraying VIROSOFTCP4 before first egg hatch, we ensure a full coverage of virus on all laid eggs. A second spray two (2) weeks later is recommended to cover eggs laid after the first egg hatch with viruses, i.e. cover eggs laid after the first spray.

(II) the only substance that larvae ingest while crawling to the fruits are water droplets on the leaves. When the virus is sprayed, it dries on the leaves and stays in the leaves crevices. Thus, in the morning, the dew is full of virus and when the larva quenches its thirst, it gets infected.

(III) larvae can be infected by cutting the skin to get into the fruit, but since it gets infected right from the beginning, it only leaves a small sting that has healed by the end of the growing season.

VIROSOFTCP4’s concentration has been determined taking into consideration the amount of particles destroyed by UV rays. Therefore, even though a certain percentage is in fact destroyed by UV rays, VIROSOFTCP4 concentration is high enough so that the particles remaining in the field are in a sufficient amount to keep a high rate of efficacy.

In conclusion, because we want to cover with virus as many eggs as possible, we recommend a first treatment before egg hatch and a second spray 2 weeks later to cover eggs laid after the first treatment. Repeat the same operation for every Codling moth generation. The product should be diluted in the minimal amount of water that will ensure the best coverage of the trees, similar to the application of a fungicide.
